Cheltenham Festival Leading Trainers
Written by Ben Tuffin on February 10, 2020
Every horse racing trainer dreams of having a winner at the Cheltenham Festival, though some will go on to have many a winner at one of the sport’s most famous events.
The world of horse racing is extremely competitive with a huge number of trainers all competing in the professional ranks of the sport. Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliot and Nicky Henderson are just some of the top names within their profession and all have had success at Cheltenham through the years.
Since 2011, the Cheltenham Festival has really been dominated by Mullins, who has finished as the leading trainer at the festival on six occasions, including most recently in 2019 where he had four winners across the week.
However, Elliott has also had his fair share of success of late, winning the award in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018 with an incredible combined 14 winners across the two years, finishing with 6 and 8 winners respectively. The only other trainer to win the award since 2011 was Henderson in 2012 when he came away from the week with seven winners.
Mullins leads the way with the all-time winners at the Cheltenham Festival on 65, being closely followed by Henderson in second. Paul Nicholls is third in that list, while Gordon Elliott is making steady progress up the leaderboard despite being just a decade into his training career.
There will be plenty of betting and everyone will be after the trainers tips with their vast knowledge.
Below, we have listed each of the trainers to have won the Irish Independent Leading Trainer Award since 1990.
