Northampton shoppers are shocked by the news that the town centre Marks & Spencer store may close.
The iconic British store is working through a programme of 100 store closures and Northampton’s Abington Street outlet is among the shops that may face the axe.
The company will be consulting with staff about what happens but has stated it hopes shoppers migrate to their larger Rushen Lakes site if Northampton closes.
The trend towards online retailing is seen as part of the problem and it is thought Northampton Borough Council may be looking for a shopping strategy that is more about small start-ups rather than big name retail brands. Entertainment and culture are also seen as possible ways of restoring the vitality of town centres.
