Age UK Northamptonshire Launch Hydration and Nutrition Campaign.

Written by on May 25, 2020

Last week, Age UK Northamptonshire launched their Hydration and Nutrition Campaign to help older people in the county keep healthy and hydrated during the hot weather. With the older population being asked to isolate during the COVID-19 outbreak, Age UK Northamptonshire are keen to ensure that crucial elements of health and wellbeing are maintained.

Dehydration can be extremely dangerous for older people. Common complications associated with dehydration include low blood pressure, weakness, dizziness and an increased risk of falls. Poorly hydrated individuals are more likely to develop pressure sores and skin conditions. All of which can lead to unplanned hospital admissions putting pressure on the NHS and putting this vulnerable group at risk of catching Coronavirus.

The charity welcomed donations of Hot ‘n’ Cold flasks from the 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan. Age UK Northamptonshire clients received one of these flasks with their hot meal delivery so they can keep their tea warm or their water cool. Fluids are crucial in keeping the urinary tract and kidneys healthy so the charity is hopeful that the convenience of the flasks will encourage older people to increase their fluid intake.

Age UK Northamptonshire was also delighted to receive a huge £400 donation from Kris Desmond of eMortgages. Kris raised the money by selling squares on football cards. The money raised bought fresh fruit which was made into fruit baskets and delivered to Age UK Northamptonshire clients who have Dementia.

The hydration and nutrition campaign will run for the rest of May and will see the locally registered and funded charity supply clients with advice and guidance on keeping well during the warm weather.

Fern Overton, Day Care and Transport Service Manager at Age UK Northamptonshire said “We are very grateful for the donations towards our campaign. Helping our clients maintain their physical health is so important and we know it’ll also have a positive impact on their mental health, in what is a really difficult time. We’re looking forward to rolling out the rest of the campaign, which will include delivering ice lollies.”
