Bard of Northampton Breathes New Life Into Town’s Arts Scene

Bard of Northampton, Paul Giffney, is looking at reinvigorating the arts scene in Northampton with the return of an old showcase event.
“Raising the Awen” is an open-mic night at The Lab which offers a stage for anyone with a story to tell in a supportive and friendly environment. These stories can be shared through spoken word, poetry, music or even stand-up comedy. The event was a favourite of many regular performers around the town until it was shut down a couple of years ago.
Paul is reviving the event after pledging to open up the arts scene in Northampton in his declaration of Bardic Intent back in August. The Bard of Northampton is chosen by audiences at the Bardic Picnic event every summer , and each contestant must prepare two pieces of storytelling through whatever medium they decide, as well as a proposal of how they would make a difference to Northampton.
Paul also intends to open up communication channels to raise awareness of the arts scene, starting with a brand new show right here on NLive. Starting very soon, his show will alternate focus between spoken word and theatre from week to week.
Colin spoke to Paul about all of this on his breakfast show.
