Review: Crazy for You at MK Theatre
Written by Rich Beeby on March 22, 2018
Crazy for You is performed at MK Theatre until Saturday. Our breakfast show host Richard gives the lowdown on the musical.
The story centres on the character Bobby, he is desperate to see his name in lights on Broadway but down on his luck. His job as a banker see’s him sent to an old mining town to recover funds owed to the bank. There he discovers a ramshackle theatre and Polly who he falls head over heels for. Determined to make a success of the theatre he vows to put on a show with Polly and resolve the debt issues. It’s not all plain sailing though as once Polly learns Bobby’s real identity as a banker; she refuses to work with him. Cue an undercover identity as Bobby tries to overcome Polly’s rejection and win her heart.
Tom Chambers stars as Bobby. Chambers is mightily impressive throughout, but particularly shines in each of the shows beautifully choreographed scenes. Charlotte Wakefield is the perfect match for Chambers in the role of Polly, with graceful moves and stunning vocals. Claire Sweeney also stars as Irene Roth and is fine support to the leading duo, but I would have liked to see her in a role with more musical numbers.
What I liked:
The ensemble was incredible as they not only danced and sang but also played all the music for the piece, live on stage. Claire Sweeney added some sass as she sang her one number in the show – Naughty Baby. Bobby and Zangler had me in creases with their rendition of ‘What Causes That’. The chemistry between Chambers and Wakefield was believable and the dance and song routines were beautiful.
If you love traditional musicals, you cannot fail to enjoy Crazy for You. The show is blissfully dreamy and Chambers and Wakefield are an invincible duo. As the lyric in the song ‘I got Rhythm’ goes – who could ask for anything more?
