The new Mayor of Northampton has praised the owners of an award-winning Northampton restaurant for the “incredible” work they have done to help the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cllr Brian Sargeant visited Saffron restaurant in Castilian Street as part of his first mayoral engagement since taking over in the position – the fifth member of his family to have the honour.

He said: “I would like to thank you for the incredible work you have done in our community since the beginning of the pandemic – you have gone above and beyond for those in need and our key workers, and for that I commend you.”

Throughout lockdown, Saffron has offered NHS and emergency staff 50 per cent off all collection orders, while free meals worth thousands of pounds have been donated to NHS staff and those in the most vulnerable ‘shielding’ categories.

Owner Naz Islam said: “The COVID-19 crisis has united our community and shown that when we do things for each other we all benefit. Cooking these meals for the staff at NGH was an absolute pleasure and we will continue to support them in any way we can as we slowly get back to normal.

“It was wonderful to be able to welcome the Mayor down to the restaurant and we are truly humbled and privileged that he chose to visit us as his first official engagement. We look forward to hosting a charity night in aid of his chosen charity, The Lowdown, later in the year.”

During the pandemic, Saffron – which is now fully back open – has celebrated members of the community who have gone above and beyond to help in the fight against COVID-19.

Student parademic Lauren Bray and Morrisons employee Kaylee Dawes both won a year’s worth of curry to thank them for their efforts. The restaurant has also donated produce to the Hope Centre and Northampton Night Shelter, both of whom were running short on supplies.

Saffron has undergone a major refit during its enforced closure and has implemented a range of social distancing measures to ensure diners can enjoy a meal in a safe and secure environment.
