Steve Hackett - The Peter Pan of Prog!
Genesis Revisited at The Derngate Theatre, Northampton

Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971, making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album. As pioneers of progressive rock, they experimented to produce long compositions to include a strong narrative, as well as theatrics during their live shows. You might have seen Peter Gabriel wearing a foxes head! The album, Foxtrot was critically acclaimed and has stood the test of time as we celebrate its fiftieth birthday. Since leaving Genesis in 1977 to pursue a solo career, Hackett has an extensive back catalogue which showcases his expert style as a virtuoso guitarist and song writer.
Prog music lovers were treated to Foxtrot played in full at The Derngate Theatre in Northampton last night, along with highlights of Steve’s solo career. Hackett kicked off the proceedings in style with Ace of Wands from his debut album, Voyage of the Acolyte. He welcomed us all and we learned that he was one of the first musicians to play there when the theatre opened back in 1983. It was his Highly Strung tour, tickets in those days cost £4!
From his debut album to his most recent solo release, he followed with Devils Cathedral from Surrender of Silence. Nad joined with his soaring pipes and moody pensive gaze. Another Hackett highlight was his best known work, Spectral Mornings, the title track of his 1979 album. He embodied the guitar and we felt his passion ooze from within. The first half was a wonderful showcase of differing melodic styles; flawless, uplifting, and electric.
The die-hard Genesis fans were eagerly anticipating the second half. A most complicated album to perform live, in terms of its musical structure. Hackett said that rock 'n roll keeps him and his bandmates young, and I have to agree. His fingers are so nimble, he is surely the Peter Pan of Prog. The delivery of the entire album was faultless, majestic, emotive and magical. From the start with Watcher of the Skies, you could feel the energy in the room of pure gratitude and awe.
Nad Sylvan is a talented vocalist and brought his own theatrical vigour to the songs, particularly on Get ‘Em Out By Friday. He is watchable, almost creature-like in his delivery of the characters.
My personal favourite of the night was Horizons. Sitting on a stool with his acoustic guitar, no frills, no fuss, just the brilliance of the master at his work. Hackett describes it as the ‘palate cleanser’ before Suppers Ready. And then, there we were, captivated for 25 minutes on a musical experience, yet it felt like an eye-blink.
The show closed to a standing ovation. World-class musicians doing their thing. Steve brought his beloved wife, Jo, on stage at the end for her Birthday, recognising her love and support. I wasn’t born when Foxtrot was released, I am hoping that in another 50 years time, it will still be appreciated for the musical masterpiece that it is.
A must-see show for all Genesis and Hackett enthusiasts. Hackett still has it!
